Dreamweaver MX and Vista Fix – Insert Tables – Best fix

Hello everyone! A common problem for Vista users with Dreamweaver MX is the “Insert>Tables” function; it simply will not work. I have already posted two articles on this issue providing some fixes for the issue. In the first article, I show how to make the “Insert Table” function actually do something and that is insert a table. The only problem with THIS fix is that it doesn’t allow you to change the specs before the table is inserted into your Document. The second fix is a tip given by a user, and another tip given by me which has worked for a decent ammount of people, but not all (for some it only worked temporarily, then the problem occured again.) In this tutorial, I will be giving a new fix which will make the “Insert Tables” function work like a charm.
1. First thing is first, download, save, and extract this ZIP file: newtable1.zip
2. Right click and copy the “table.htm” file (The code in this file was taken from an extension called “etable” that you can download from http://www.idest.com/dreamweaver/objects-fr.htm)
3. Go to C:\Program Files\Macromedia\Dreamweaver MX\Configuration\Objects\Common (NOTE: Some users may have to go there AND C:\Users\YOUR USER NAME\AppData\Roaming\Macromedia\Dreamweaver MX\Configuration\Objects\Common and repeat the following steps in both locations. This location is “Hidden” so either enable windows explorer to view hidden files and navigate to this location, OR copy and paste the filepath into the address bar in windows explorer and replace “YOUR USER NAME” with an appropriate username.)
4. In this folder, rename “Table.htm” to “Tableold.htm” so you can reuse this file as a backup.
5. Now, press CTRL+V to paste the recently downloaded “Table.htm” file.
6. Open up Dreamweaver MX and insert a table 
Now, the customization feature won’t look exactly like the original, but it has all the functions – plus a little more! If you want, you can even tweak this “Table.htm” file to do whatever you’d like.
For me, this is the best way to get Dreamweaver MX to insert tables on Windows Vista.

I received this e-mail from Dave who has some useful information for those who may have trouble using this fix.
Just a heads up I had to change the file in all of these location in order to get it to work. Thought I would let you know in case anyone else had trouble with it. So thank you for pointing me in the right direction. The tables not working has been a huge frustration since switching to vista.

In Dave’s case, there are 4 file paths in which he had to paste the “Table.htm” file. This situation is pretty uncommon, but if you find yourself STILL not being able to get the ‘Insert Table” function to work, search out some new file paths that are in relation to Dreamweaver MX.
Please note, typically, when you need to paste this file in more than the two file paths is when you’ve uninstalled and reinstalled Dreamweaver MX multiple times. When uninstalling Dreamweaver MX, Vista leaves behind the hidden “Configuration” files, thus, when reinstalling, a second Configuration folder is created. I hope this makes sense. Did not work for me – Dreamweaver still ignores the caommand to make a table. I am using MX and Vista.

At first for me, it did not work either. I realized I had to check the second folder path and paste the HTML document there as well.

This seems to have worked for alot of people. It won’t perform like this fix does, but will give you some functionality. Adobe just released CS4, I’d advice any Vista user to save up and upgrade.

Thanks! That was great. I needed to add the table file to both locations. One thing that I got stuck on was that I couldn’t see the AppData directory. It didn’t take long until I realized that it was a hidden folder so I un-hid it under Organize > Folder and Search Options > View > Show hidden files and folders.

Actually, I Cant thank you enough for taking the time to post information like this. I use DW for work and have been trying to survive the upgrade from XP Pro to Vista 64Bit. As soon as I saw the table issues within seconds of working on a site, I groaned aloud, realizing the headache in store. Ultimately, your page saved a helluva lot of head scratching. It worked great with lowly old Dreamweaver MX on the latest version of Vista 64 so hats off to you.

Brilliant! Worked after Risa (above) reminded me that the AppData folder under Users is hidden. (Just to repeat Risa: to un-hide the folder, go under Organize > Folder and Search Options > View > Show hidden files and folders.)

I’m a struggling beginner trying to create a website relying on tutorials and when things do not work, it really messes things up and then you just want to give up. I haven’t encountered this problem.
I read a number of posts on the web that Dreamweaver MX 2004 runs better on Vista when you put it into Windows XP compability mode and Run as administrator.
You can choose these settings by going into the folder that has the Dreamweaver.exe application, and then right-clicking on the Dreamweaver app.
On my computer, Dreamweaver is here:
C:\Program Files\Macromedia\Dreamweaver MX 2004
The only nit I’m encountering is that I have to authorize running Dreamweaver every time I launch it in Vista. No big deal.

WOW. Thought I’d screwed up when I did the first htm copy/paste and nada, then I pasted it in the second spot and “VIOLA” (hahaha), IT WORKED. We have TABLE!

it solves my insert table problem but i have other issues. when i click on Command or Help menu, DW will close.
i have traced that it will try to execute the scripts inside C:\Program Files\Macromedia\Dreamweaver MX\Configuration\Commands folder and Vista will not allow it.
any idea on this?

THIS WORKED PERFECTLY! Thanks soooo much! I only had to put in 1 path.The first path which is in Program Files. Don’t know why… I had my hidden files showing and when I followed the path from my user, only got as far as dreamweaver mx then the “common” folder was no where to be found so I just did the first path and opened up Dreamweaver MX and Table insert worked!

hi I’m new to web design, not very good with computers…in folder “objects” instead of table.htm i have TableTag.htm. is it different? I have changed that to TableTagold.htm. Anyway cannot paste the extracted table file. Can you help?

Thanks – those were beautiful instructions. I only had to deal with the user … appdata folder. However, I even succeeded in changing the values for cellpadding and cellspacing – tho not, oddly, not width.

I did install the update.
Then I pasted the new table.htm in the four locations, as above, because I had already removed & re-installed DW.
It worked
Since this app is no longer supported this was about my only hope for a fix.

I fixed this a different way. I looked through these procedures but was very hesitant to replace a default file with someone else’s if I didn’t have to.
I noticed that the file in my C:\Users\XXX\…\Roaming\…\Table.htm had a size of 0B–i.e. it was empty. I simply copied the default file from the C:\Program Files\…\Table.htm and pasted it there.
Worked like a champ.

David you rock!! I am responsible for maintaining a website that I designed for a charity here in the UK. I upgraded my laptop to 7 a month ago and Dreamweaver hasn’t been the same since. Thanks to your fix, it’s all working swimmingly again. The tables thing had unexpected consequences like screwing the formatting six ways to a Sunday and stuff too. Now it’s working just as it did before and I’m really pleased. Neither the charity nor I have the money to upgrade.

Indeed a truly awesome fix. Found this problem on upgrading to Windows 7. Thought the app had crashed so re-installed twice (!!) before finding your page. Have only replaced it in the first location and it seems to work fine so far. Your instructions are really clear so don’t anticipate a problem if I do have to paste the new table.htm file in the other locations. Like the idea of being able to customise the interface as well.
