Common iPhone OS 2.0/2.0.1 Problem – Frozen Apple iCon Screen
The iPhone. An amazing little gadget that seems to be in the hands of almsot everyone now. Apple has made a huge comeback over the last decade and have begun expanding….but are they ready? Is Apple moving too fast?
Think about it, Apple was so used to being in the low 5% of computer sales and were eventually taken out of most schools. Now their computers are a standard in digital audio and video recording and design, and they have expanded to newer products such as the iPod, iPhone, and iTouch which have become a huge success…for now, at least.
The Apple message boards have had numerous posts recently about a problem effecting the iPhone OS 2.0 and OS 2.0.1.
What happens is this: during, say, an app install or update install, the progress of the installation is interrupted by a sudden reboot of the iPhone. The screen darkens as if it were turned off, then the Apple Logo appears and it freezes (or the file system mounts.) When it does this, it vibrates or beebs a couple of times, or does both. From here you can really do nothing; the phone freezes with the “Apple Icon Screen of Death.”
There is a fix for it – though not the happiest of fixes. You have to perform a complete restore on your iPhone which can take hours to complete. Apparently, the reason is because your iPhone is stuck in some sort of loop that it can’t get out of, UNLESS you complete a factory restore
To do this, press and hold down the Sleep/Wake and Home and not letting go until the iPhone reboots and prompts you to connect the iPhone to iTunes. You then have to restore all your old settings, your firmware, your media and apps. This is what takes a long time.
While doing this, you’ll be asked if you would like to recover your iPhone from a backup – but unfortunately, this option is just as full of holes and unreliability as the iPhone 2.0 and 2.0.1 operating systems themselves, if not worse. Alot of people get an error saying that a previously valid backup is now corrupt.
As far as avoiding this problem, I really don’t know as I do not have an iPhone, I just do the research. A few reccomendations I have seen to avoid having this problem/ever getting it again is to apply updates to your iPhone one at a time, without using the “Update All” option.
I hope this helps anyone out there having this issue with their iPhone!

Hi David,
I have had an iPhone for a few months now (I have even been through the 2.0-2.0.1 OS update) and I know what you mean with the freezing. Usually (at least for me and a few other iPhone owners that I personally know) the iPhone freezes when you download an app and attempt to use the internet, or anything the needs the G3 network. So, the only advice I can add to your article is: 1) Let your app download and install completely before using the phone again. 2) It also really helps to turn the phone off, then back on after downloading an app; especially a big one. Ever since I started doing that, it’s been smooth sailing.
After the 2.0.1 OS update I mostly have problems with making phone calls. Sometimes, even with the strongest of signals, the phone will reject all calls, incoming and outgoing, just after you connect with another number. You can get on safari and send text messages and even e mails just fine though. I notice that usually happens after downloading large apps. Once again, turning the phone off, then back on usually fixes that. I think people need to start viewing the iPhone as a computer more than a phone. Most people I know never turn their phones off… ever! When you install a program on your computer, typically they suggest a complete restart. I don’t think it is any different with the iPhone. Then again I have never owned a Mac… =(
Thanks for writing the article, it was very informative and I think your readers will get a lot out of it.
